How long a charge takes, roughly
The arithmetic is simple. Divide the pack size in kilowatt-hours by the charger output in kilowatts, and you have the approximate hours. A 2 kWh pack on a 0.5 kW charger is somewhere near four hours.
Add margin. The final stretch of a lithium charge is deliberately slowed by the BMS to balance cells and protect them, so the last ten percent takes disproportionately longer than the first ten.
What a charge costs
Take your pack size in kilowatt-hours, multiply by your electricity tariff per unit, and add roughly ten to fifteen percent for charging losses — energy that goes into the charger without reaching the cells.
Do this with your own electricity bill rather than a figure from an advertisement. Tariffs vary considerably by state and by slab, and a household that crosses into a higher slab because of charging pays more per unit than the headline rate suggests.
The habits that matter
- •Use the supplied charger. A matched charger follows the correct profile and talks to the BMS. A market replacement may deliver roughly the right voltage and something much less careful in between.
- •Aim for 80–90% on ordinary days. Full charges before long rides, partial charges the rest of the time.
- •Let it complete fully sometimes. Passive cell balancing only runs at the top of a charge. A pack never allowed to finish is a pack that never balances.
- •Let it cool first. Twenty to thirty minutes after a long ride in summer, before plugging in.
- •Plug in at 20–30%, not at 2%. Routine deep discharge is the harder life for the cells.
Home charging safety
Most reported two-wheeler battery incidents in India trace back to a small number of avoidable causes. These rules cost nothing:
- •Charge in a ventilated space, never a sealed cupboard, loft or store room
- •Never charge in a doorway, stairwell or the only escape route from a room
- •Keep the charging area clear of cloth, paper, fuel and anything else flammable
- •Use a properly earthed socket rated for the load — not a thin extension cord shared with other appliances
- •Stop using any plug, socket, cable or charger that becomes warm
- •Do not cover the pack or the charger while charging
- •Never charge a pack that is swollen, damaged, or has recently been submerged
Charging in a shared building
If you charge in a shared basement or society parking, agree the arrangement with your building rather than improvising. A dedicated, earthed, correctly rated point is worth paying for, and a trailing cable down a stairwell is a genuine hazard to people other than you.
