Adani Green Energy announced that cumulative operational battery storage at its Khavda site in Gujarat had reached 3.37 GWh, which it describes as the world’s largest single-location battery storage deployment outside China.
The capacity figure is the headline. The number worth reading twice is the schedule: the company put the build at roughly ten months from the start of on-site construction.
Ten months is the story
India’s storage problem has never really been whether projects would be awarded. Tenders have been running, viability gap funding has been widened, and the pipeline on paper is large. The open question has been execution — whether awarded gigawatt- hours turn into operating plant on anything like the announced timetable.
A build of this size completed in ten months on site is a data point on the optimistic side of that question. It says the physical construction of a battery plant is fast when everything upstream of it has been resolved.
That qualifier carries the weight. Containers arrive factory-assembled and tested; site work is foundations, cabling, a substation bay and a fence. What consumes a storage project’s calendar is the connection, the approvals and the equipment lead times — none of which are visible in a construction duration.
Why this site could move that fast
- •An existing large-scale renewable complex, so land, access roads and much of the transmission were already there
- •Connection infrastructure built out for generation the site already hosts, removing the constraint that usually sets the energisation date
- •Procurement at a scale that commands supplier attention and delivery slots

Almost none of that transfers to a standalone project on a greenfield site negotiating its own connection. The ten months is real, and it is not a benchmark most projects can hold themselves to.
Read the capacity figure carefully. It is cumulative operational capacity at the site, reported by the developer, and the “largest” claim is explicitly qualified as outside China. Company announcements are a legitimate source for what a company has built; they are not independent verification.
What a developer should take from it

- •Co-locating with existing renewable assets converts the hardest problem — grid connection — into one that is already solved
- •Scale buys delivery slots, which in a tight global cell market is itself a schedule advantage
- •Announced commissioning dates elsewhere in the pipeline should still be discounted, because most projects do not start from this position

The thing still unresolved
India can evidently build large battery plant quickly. What it still largely imports is the cells inside them. Until domestic cell manufacturing arrives at scale, build speed is a demonstration of construction capability sitting on top of a supply chain that begins somewhere else.
