Heat is a load, even when the vehicle is parked

Most of India spends a large part of the year above the temperature range in which lithium cells are happiest. In a Delhi or Ahmedabad May, a pack sitting in direct sun on a parked vehicle can reach well above the ambient air temperature — and it is degrading while it sits there, doing no work at all.

This is worth understanding properly, because most of the useful precautions are about parked vehicles and charging, not about driving.

What heat actually does

  • It speeds up ageing. The chemical side-reactions that permanently reduce capacity run faster at higher temperatures. This is gradual, invisible and cumulative — you notice it as range that never came back after summer.
  • It stacks with charging heat. A pack generates its own heat while charging. Starting from an already-hot pack means the peak temperature is higher than either factor alone would produce.
  • It narrows the safety margin. A healthy pack with a working BMS has protections that hold. A damaged, poorly built or badly repaired pack has less margin, and heat is what consumes what remains.

What thermal management is, and what it is not

“Thermal management” covers everything a pack does to keep its cells in range: physical layout that spreads heat, materials that conduct it away from cells, casing design that allows airflow, and BMS logic that reduces current or cuts off charging when sensors report high temperature.

What it is not is a sticker. When comparing packs, ask concretely: how many temperature sensors, where are they placed, and what does the BMS do when they read high? A pack that simply keeps charging at 55°C does not have thermal management, whatever the brochure says.

Precautions that are worth the trouble

  • Park in shade, deliberately. The difference between a shaded and an unshaded parking spot in an Indian summer afternoon is large, and it is free. Over a summer it is one of the highest-value habits available.
  • Let the pack cool before charging. Twenty to thirty minutes after a long run, in shade, before plugging in.
  • Charge in ventilated space. Not a closed store room, not under a tarpaulin, not in a stairwell or the only exit from a room.
  • Avoid the hottest hours for fast charging. If you have a choice of when to charge, early morning or late evening is kinder to the pack than 2pm.
  • Keep vents and surfaces clear. Dust layers and cloth covers over a pack trap heat. So does mounting cargo directly on top of it.

Precautions that are not worth it

Do not pour water on a hot pack, do not wrap it in wet cloth, and do not point a domestic fan into an open battery compartment while it charges. These introduce water and dust into a sealed electrical assembly to solve a problem that shade and time solve safely.

The warning signs that mean stop now

Heat-related failures announce themselves. If you notice any of the following, stop charging, move the vehicle away from anything flammable if it is safe to do so, keep people away, and call your service provider:

  • A casing that has swollen, bulged or changed shape
  • A sharp or chemical smell during or after charging
  • Smoke, sparks, or a casing too hot to keep a hand on
  • Charging that continues long past its normal time
  • A pack that was recently submerged, dropped or struck

Do not attempt to open or repair a suspect pack yourself, and do not hand it to a roadside repairer without the right equipment. An opened lithium pack is a different and much less forgiving object than a lead-acid one.
